The Broken Pack’s Sibling Grief Refuge

A Sibling Loss Retreat Where Wild Grief Meets Solace

August 15th -18th

In the Laurel Highlands near Pittsburgh, PA

Losing your sibling was devastating. Like many others who have experienced this disenfranchised loss you may have felt invisible in your grief and craved to be around others who could relate to your experience. The Sibling Grief Refuge will provide that and more.

This August, join us in Western Pennsylvania for an event that will exceed your every expectation…

The Sibling Grief Refuge is a 4-day, 3-night grief retreat that will take place in the Laurel Highlands, just east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the southwestern part of the state.

We will be relaxing in a spacious retreat and conference center that is full of amenities such as a fitness center, professionally run kitchen, a business center, a museum, and free wifi.

After our days are complete you will retire in your private guest room with an ensuite bath or enjoy the beautiful, picturesque location. The retreat center is located on 300 acres and is surrounded by miles of wooded walking trails, a wooded meditation trail, campfire sites, picnic pavilions, a sports complex, volleyball and basketball courts, a pond, and beautiful open areas.

It’s the perfect backdrop for connecting with others, time for respite, and processing your grief no matter how long ago your sibling died.

So, what exactly are we going to do?

From the moment you arrive at the retreat center, you will enjoy:

      • Your private, single occupancy room with an ensuite bath
      • Delicious, nutritious chef prepared meals
      • Plenty of space and access to the beautiful grounds.
      • The company of other grieving siblings, including our founder and sibling loss grief expert, Angela Dean, PsyD

Beyond physical comfort, we’re placing careful attention on emotional safety:

      • Supportive Experience: You will experience a genuinely supportive environment in which we will help you discover new ways of expressing and processing your grief, of sharing your sibling loss story, and reconnecting with your much-loved sibling.
      • Expert Facilitation: Led by Dr. Angela M. Dean, a psychologist, thanatologist, and sibling loss survivor, our retreat offers expert guidance and support, ensuring that attendees feel understood and validated throughout their journey.
      • Presence and Access to Grief and Mental Health Experts: If you have any questions, concerns, or needs at any point during The Sibling Grief Refuge, the facilitators will be on hand to support you with whatever you need so you can fully immerse yourself in the practices, workshops, and conversations.
      • Small Group Setting: With limited spots available, our retreat fosters an intimate, confidential atmosphere where you can connect deeply with one another, forming bonds of trust and support that endure beyond the retreat.
      • Validation and Understanding: You will likely find solace in a community of sibling loss survivors who share their experiences and offer genuine empathy and validation, creating a sense of belonging and understanding that eases the burden of this so often misunderstood grief.
      • Emotionally Supportive Activities: Through grief-focused sessions and therapeutic activities, you will be guided through exploring your grief in a nurturing and compassionate environment, empowering you to explore your emotions, thoughts, and overall experience at your own pace.
      • Optional Involvement: You will be encouraged to participate in activities and discussions at your own comfort level, respecting your need for autonomy and personal boundaries, ensuring that you and everyone in attendance can engage in the retreat experience in a way that feels safe and supportive.

As we establish emotional safety, we’ll turn our focus to processing and experiencing our grief. Some of those include:

        • Journaling and Narrative Exploration: You will engage in guided journaling sessions and narrative therapy techniques, delving into your sibling loss grief journey of learning to live with grief alongside fellow attendees.
        • Intimate Group Dialogues: You will participate in professionally facilitated intimate group dialogues with fellow grieving siblings, providing a nurturing space for heartfelt sharing, reflection, validation, and mutual support. Guided by our compassionate facilitators, these dialogues will offer opportunities for authentic connections, validation, and collective wisdom as you navigate the path of moving forward with grief together at The Sibling Grief Refuge.
        • Expressive Arts Sessions: You will have the chance to immerse yourself in therapeutic art, writing, and/or music, allowing you to express your complex emotions, grief responses, thoughts, and memories creatively. Through creativity, you will explore themes of loss, resilience, continuing bonds with your sibling, and living with grief.
        • Mindfulness & Self-Compassion Practices: You will learn to practice mindfulness to cultivate present-moment awareness, non-judgment and self-compassion amidst the turbulence of grief. You will learn to integrate mindfulness-based approaches to navigating life with grief.
        • Connection with Nature: You will have the opportunity to delve into experiences designed to process your loss, find comfort, and enhance your well-being. Within the 30-day window, our best option is to “swap” out your spot for somebody on the waitlist and give you a refund. If that’s not possible, we will not be able to offer a full refund but will work with you to give you a partial refund, discount on a future event, or another similarly creative solution.
